White Elephant Gifts Under $20: 20 Fun Ideas People Will Actually Steal

A white elephant exchange is the one time a year a $13 waffle maker can start a friendly feud. The rules are simple: everyone brings a wrapped gift, people take turns opening or stealing, and the best gifts get passed around until the last turn.

So what makes a gift worth stealing? It is useful or funny enough that most adults want it, and it does not need a size, a taste test or an inside joke. Every pick below is under $20, most are under $15, and I checked each price on Walmart.com so you can shop in one sitting.

What makes a great white elephant gift?

• Most adults want it. Games, cozy things, kitchen helpers and snacks beat anything too personal.
• No sizes or guessing. One-size socks and throws are fine; clothes in sizes are not.
• It looks bigger than it cost. A throw or a mug full of treats feels generous.
• It is a little fun to open. A surprise in a big box gets a laugh before anyone sees what it is.
• It stays inside the limit. If the cap is $20, spend $20, not $35. Nobody wants to be the reason next year's limit goes up.

Fun gifts and games people steal

Cozy white elephant gifts

Cozy gifts are the quiet winners. Nobody screams when they open a blanket, but it is the gift people try to steal back in the final round.

Gifts to skip at a white elephant

• Anything with a size, other than one-size socks or a throw.
• Strong perfume or body spray. Scent is personal.
• Inside jokes only two people in the room understand.
• Gag gifts nobody keeps. Funny for one minute, then trash. Aim for funny and useful.
• Alcohol at a workplace or family party with kids, unless you know it is welcome.

Wrap it so it gets picked first

Half the fun is the box. Wrap small gifts in a bigger box, use kraft paper and red twine, and add a tag that teases what is inside ("Open me if you like breakfast"). My free printable Christmas gift tags print 12 cozy tags on one sheet, and the Christmas gift tags in my Etsy shop add more designs for $3.
